We’re delighted to announce Maya Leggat and Gabriel Arkles as our imams and Nakia Jackson as our prayer coach. Maya will be leading the prayer & Gabriel will be giving the khutba/sermon. They love cats, have a big sweet tooth, and love reading (especially scifi/fantasy). Gabriel Sabir Arkles is a lawyer and writer in Brooklyn, NY (Lenape land). He works at the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund, serves on the board of HEARD (a cross-disability abolitionist organization), and helps lead the Alyssa Rodriguez Center for Gender Justice. Growing up, he attended the Bawa Muhaiyaddeen Fellowship in Philadelphia. As an adult, he is grateful for many sources of spiritual support and guidance; he connects with queer and trans Muslim community at MASGD, attends jummah services at Masjid al-Rabia, joins dhikr circles at Dergah al-Farah, and studies Islamic feminist and abolitionist theology with FITNA and Queer Muslim Book Club. Nakia Jackson is a freelance writer and editor with a demonstrated history of working in the writing and editing industry. Last week, the Supreme Court delivered a surprising and decisive victory for the LGBTQ community, ruling that employers cannot fire people based on gender identity or sexual orientation. Though the landmark decision is a major step forward in the march for equality, the fight for LGBTQ civil rights is far from over. In fact, this was only the first ever transgender rights case heard by the Supreme Court. There are still significant gaps in federal discrimination protection, and it remains an especially dangerous time for trans women of color. To better understand this historic and volatile moment, The Intercept’s Travis Mannon is joined by Gabriel Arkles, a senior staff attorney at the ACLU who worked on the transgender rights case, to unpack the implications of the pivotal Supreme Court decision, the ongoing threats to the trans community, and what the road ahead looks like in the fight for trans justice. This conference was the first in a series of events taking place in the midwest, south, and west coast to explore the themes of Invisible No More and ongoing resistance to police violence against Black women and women of color.
